PAUS Programme

Pay less for reliable Milk Chilling

Exclusive to Fonterra Farmers

Pay-As-You-Save (PAUS) is an innovative programme making it easier for Fonterra farmers to access next generation milk chilling technology and enjoy the many benefits that come with it.

The PAUS initiative offers Fonterra farmers the option to lease new cutting-edge refrigeration systems enhancing efficiency and sustainability, all while reducing upfront capital expenditure.

Is your dairy farm ready?

Since 2020, the ability to import many refrigerant gases has been reduced by 36%. By 2030 they will nearly be phased out completely.

This will lead to significantly higher maintenance costs for your existing milk chilling unit.

How the PAUS programme works

How PAUS benefits farmers

Electricity Savings

Coolsense units generate hot water, unlike most systems where heat is wasted, this combined with how efficiently the system runs, mean that Dairy Shed power consumption can be reduced by up to 30%.

Cost Effective

Farmers will enjoy annual savings  through their electricity bill, repair and maintenance costs, and raising refrigerant gas costs.

Reduced On Farm CO2e

The leased Coolsense units use 4th generation refrigerants instead of HFCs. They have shown a reduction in CO2e of  80%, on average, compared to older systems.

Improved
Technology

The Coolsense units deliver transparent data and allow real-time remote monitoring.

Milk Quality
Benefits

Milk snap chilling to 6°C or below to comply with milk chilling regulations. Older systems can struggle to achieve this, particularly as they age.

Hassle Free
Maintenance

Full servicing of the Coolsense chilling units is overseen by Coolcare as part of the lease agreement*.

The Chilling Unit

Milk chilling systems are critical in ensuring milk gets to the required temperature of 6°C or below within two hours of milking, but the units represent a significant capital investment for farmers and can become increasingly costly as they age.

Older units are much more limited in terms of their technology and features, and use Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which is a gas that is being phased down and becoming increasingly costly in New Zealand.
